Founding Heiress
Heiress is my wildest dream that I can't believe has come true. It is a solely black women owned business operating out of central Illinois. I technically created the name of the store first, along with another business I had started, "Amara Beauty & Fragrance" ( unsurprisingly like many small business it started out of my bedroom ) in 2018. However, the aesthetic, message, and ideas I had for Heiress Jewelry & Luxury Store became much more aligned with the woman I was becoming and just as importantly the woman I Wanted to become. However, for my customers who have been with me from the beginning you'll find that the Heiress collection of fragrances and beautycare is still the same quality and product they were, when they were being sold in the Amara store.
About Me: Mesa Powell (CEO/Owner)
My name is Mesa and I am 23 years old. I brainstormed Heiress when I was about 18 years old in my teenage bedroom. Creating the name and logo was how I visualized and manifested my business and how it eventually led to me designing and centering this business idea on my vision board and now 5 years later, here we are. I am currently an undergrad majoring in Anthropology as well as a full-time Gymnastics coach. As much as I had an affinity for learning and clearly a love of working with children. I always loved exploring my dainty, ethereal, and light side growing up and I expressed this in fashion, makeup, and hairstyles. Most importantly I loved to accessorize! These are all factors which led me to opening my business and the type of products I wanted to sell. I believe any outfit can be dressed up or dressed down depending on the right jewelry or handbag. Also growing up both as a women and a black women the importance put on our hair and our relationship to it should no longer be a controversial or forced thing. I wanted to sell and/or curate products that would be utilized in a way that makes ALL women as well as any gender love their hair, no matter how we choose to style and care for it. "Hair is the crown you always wear." This is what led to the creation "Hairess by Heiress, a Hair & Beautycare line." I wanted to create something that was an accurate representation of me and the reality of the life I am living, and the hope of the type the life I wish to lead.
Our Message
Timelessness, Fantasy, Academia, & Culture - Heiress was created with the idea that ANYONE can and should feel like royalty. For the young child in us who loved to feel special, beautiful, and magical. These are all feelings that should still be within us throughout our entire lives and not just in childhood. I believe that the experience of shopping with luxury brands shouldn't be an experience reserved strictly for the well off. That acquiring ownership of items like magnificent jewelry, and elegant dresses, as well as finely curated accessories & clothing should still be somewhat affordable. All the while these products should still hold emotional AND monetary value, and to ignore either of those things as significant especially in the world we live in would be a huge disservice to customers/collectors like you! So when choosing vendors, designs, materials, and prices I have my customers in mind making sure quality & affordability are what they should be. - Mesa
